Mistaken Identity: Bronfman plays Brahms concert
Brahms: Variations on a Theme of Haydn
The Brahms Variations on a Theme of Haydn is not actually based on a Hayden work. Misattributions were a common occurrence in music up to the 19th century, as copyright laws were non-existent and music circulated freely in manuscript form. For commercial reasons, publishers sometimes passed off works by lesser composers as if they had been written by the great masters; also, they often made unwitting errors as information about authorship was difficult or impossible to verify.
Haydn: Symphony No. 44, Trauersinfonie
The Haydn Symphony No. 44 is the Trauersinfonie, a symphony of mourning. Late in life, Haydn requested the slow 3rd movement to be played at his funeral.
Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 1
The Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1’s identity is more like that of a symphony for piano than it is a concerto—mistaken identity. It was influenced by Beethoven’s 9th symphony.
